About Julia

My name is Julia Pearring. I took my first yoga class at the age of 20. I went with a friend, showed up late and found downward facing dog and all the rest extremely difficult. That could have been the end of it, but I was having extreme audition anxiety and my college french horn teacher suggested I do yoga to gain some perspective— I was taking it all too seriously. A few months after that first class I got a job at Equinox so that I could practice regularly for free.

I am a Certified Anusara Yoga Teacher. I completed my first Teacher Training in the Anusara Yoga method between 2006–2008. Its comprehensive and deeply intentional approach fit me like a glove. I am forever grateful to the simplicity and the expansive nature of this practice. Given the structures and maps of Anusara Yoga, after two decades it continues to lead to transformative discoveries and ever greater subtlety, supporting me as a teacher and a teacher trainer.

I had to know why it worked so well. Specifically between 2008–2015, and up to today, this led me to many advanced studies outside the Anusara community, including extensive anatomy, kinesiology, and physiology training through cadaver dissections with Gil Hedley, explorations of Body Mind Centering and Laban Movement Analysis with Amy Matthews, fascial research with Tom Myers, and more. Everything I have studied both challenged my assumptions and revealed a deeper understanding of the method of Anusara Yoga.

I lead teacher trainings on the 200hr and 500hr certification levels. I present classes and workshops at conferences. At Samavesha 2016, I introduced the addition of Ankle Loop as an Open to Grace principle, and I continue to expand the Anusara Yoga method, to challenge myself and all those that teach it to unpack its potential, as we've still just scraped the surface. I cowrote the Therapeutic Applications of Anusara Teacher's Guide, published in 2020.

I am a certified yoga therapist. I teach classes and maintain a private therapeutic practice in NYC teaching 5 public classes and an average of 12-15 private sessions per week. I supports students in exploring their optimal range to uncover their potential for a deeper alignment. I work to support aging bodies, those with physical limitations as well as athletes. I lead by example and support others in establishing and unfolding an active sadhana—basing one’s personal practice on compassionate self-inquiry.

I am the managing director of the World Yoga Center. This yoga school is where I was trained. I have supported the school with my time and given a lifelong commitment to caring it forward for its second 50 years (opened 1972), having had an apprentice-like training from the director, Rudrani Farbman, since 2007.

All of these "I am" statements I take very seriously, it has been my great desire and pleasure to be a teacher and a transmitter in the world. I also take all of these "I am" statements very lightly, there is no role in particular that serves me or the world more than my relationship with my Self/Guru/God/LOVE.
